Looking For Signs of Pregnancy in BBT Chart

basal body temperature

BBT chart is primarily used for increasing chances of pregnancy when you are planning to conceive. It can indicate pregnancy as well.

Although not an utmost necessity, drawing a coverline helps in reading your chart properly. The easiest way of doing that is to draw a horizontal line 1/10th of degree above the six highest readings before a sudden rise in basal body temperature.

Your BBT chart is biphasic, which means that you will be seeing temperatures below the coverline during the follicular or first phase of menstrual cycle, and above it during the second or luteal phase or post ovulation phase. If pregnancy does not occur the BBT chart will again show low temperatures as you revert to the follicular phase. However, if your temperature does not stay above the coverline for at least 12 days, it is a sign of luteal phase defect, meaning that it is too short for sustaining pregnancy.

There might be an instance where the basal body temperature chart shows high temperatures that are above the coverline consistently for eighteen days. This may indicate pregnancy but is not a sure sign. Sometimes you may even see a third rise in basal body temperature, which is known as a triphasic BBT chart. Triphasic pattern in a BBT chart is normally seen with pregnancy, but is not a sure sign of conception. Basal body temperature in many women shows a three-stage pattern, even when they are not pregnant.

Another thing to note in your BBT chart if you have irregular cycle lengths is that ovulation can occur anywhere between day 14 and 21 and not in the middle of the cycle. For a clearer picture, it is better to combine basal body temperature method with cervical mucus monitoring. Cervical mucus attains egg-white consistency on ovulation, and this is considered to be fertile.

BBT chart method is a proven method of determining ovulation time, identifying fertility problems and also as a natural method of birth control; it is simple and inexpensive. All that you require is a basal body thermometer and chart your basal body temperature every day on waking up. At the start of your menstrual cycle, you have low temperatures. After ovulation, the temperature rises above the coverline.
